The Cockpit Country is one of the finest examples in the world of karst hydrology. It has actually been formed entirely by erosion, and although the Cockpit Country gets the second highest rainfall in Jamaica, surface water is by and large nonexistent. This is due to the many sinkholes in which quickly drains all the water that falls on its surface. Due to the sensitive environment of caves and their bat populations, many of these caves are not safe to enter. For more information of caving in Jamaica go to www.jamaicancaves.org. |
